In this sermon we discuss the coherence between ‘dispositional belief’ and ‘occurrent belief’ that Paul is referring to when he explains that the word of faith is to both “believe in our heart” and “confess with our mouth”. A true, saving faith must crystalize the abstract, unarticulated belief that God has raised Jesus from the dead into a concrete comprehension of what that means: Jesus is Lord. This is not something we say with our anatomical mouth (just as believing with our heart is not our anatomical heart). It is a belief that we articulate in our own hearts. It is the positive version of what Paul wrote just a few verses prior: “Say not in your heart…” To confess Jesus is to say in your heart.
