“Doesn’t God just want me to be happy?”
Happiness is nice, but it is overrated in our modern culture. There are many things much more important and valuable than happiness. Faith, family, integrity, righteousness, and responsibility just to name a few.
However, as a goal or objective, happiness is toxic. It leads to addiction, narcissism, and irresponsibility. It is the emotional equivalent of making wealth the goal rather than work and productivity.
God wants you to be be right and to do right, and those don’t always result in happiness; especially in a culture that only seeks self-gratification. God also wants you to repent and mourn for your sin and the sin of those you love. And God wants to comfort you and give you an eternal inheritance of joy in his everlasting kingdom.
“Blessed are they that mourn: for they shall be comforted. Seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.” – Matthew 5:4 & 6:3
